Barnabas is an old man who lives in Devil's Crossing. He is the handyman of the settlement, maintaining whatever equipment its people need to survive.

Background[ | ]

At the start of the game, the situation for the people of Devil's Crossing is dire. The settlement's only source of water, the water pump, is broken, and someone needs to salvage scrap in Lower Crossing to repair it. However, this salvage mission is too dangerous as the village now hosts a growing army of walking dead who attack Devil's Crossing with increasing frequency.

Eventually, the protagonist destroys the source behind the horde of living corpses, Kyzogg the Reanimator.[1] This gives Captain John Bourbon some time for strategic planning, and meanwhile the player character is assigned to helping other survivors, Kasparov and Barnabas.

Barnabas tells the Taken that he needs scrap to repair the water pump. After getting the scrap he needs, Barnabas repairs the pump, only to find out that the water it pumps is too toxic to drink. Recalling the smell from his long since past fighting days, Barnabas identifies the toxin as one secreted by Slith. The old man is no longer fit for the needed operation to clean up the cave with the water supply, so this task falls upon the player character as well.[2]

After the Taken eradicates the Slith living in the cave, Barnabas pumps out the remaining toxic water, and Devil's Crossing finally regains its source of clean water. This, however, is only a start on humanity's path to rebuilding.

After Darius Cronley had been eliminated, Barnabas gives the quest We Need Food, and provides two routes to Homestead, one through the bridge in Twin Falls, the other the Smuggler's Pass. Upon receiving the quest Making a Deal from Douglass, Barnabas tells the player Devil's Crossing had received the food from Homestead.
