Before the Grim Dawn, Jane with her brother Alex and their parents used to live in the village of Burrwitch. On that night, Jane's father left his family, apparently to participate in the battle against the Aetherial forces. Jane's mother locked her children in their room and told them to keep quiet.
Jane and Alex were eventually found by John Bourbon, who made them cover their eyes and escorted them, along with other survivors, to the old prison of Devil's Crossing. The two siblings were adopted by the former seamstress Constance.
Being a young girl, Jane is not aware or made aware of the true nature of her predicament. Even though her parents are almost certainly dead, neither Bourbon, nor Constance, nor the player character even suggest this as a possibility to Jane. The child expresses the desire to return home, unaware that her house is most likely destroyed and most definitely inhabited by monsters.
Even though both Jane and Alex are initially prohibited by Constance to talk with the Taken, Jane appears to mind this instruction far less than her brother. Unlike Alex, who barely says a word to the player character, Jane explains in detail the story behind her rescue, asking the protagonist to look for her parents.
