In Grim Dawn, Barnabas has some dialogue with the protagonist. As the handyman in Devil's Crossing, Barnabas discusses matters like broken wind pumps, bad water from fixed wind pumps, or food shortages.

Waking to Misery, haven't talked to John Bourbon yet[ | ]

Players can talk to Barnabas as the first thing they do, but this isn't needed for anything, even though perhaps it can serve as an indirect introduction.

Barnabas

So yer the one we almost hung! I didn' really see the sense in it, but then again, no one really cares what Ol' Barnabas thinks.

You really should go speak with the Captain. He'll be the one deciding whether there's a place for you here at Devil's Crossing.

  1. Take care.Dialogue ends.

And Not a Drop to Drink, giving the quest[ | ]

Barnabas is the one whose assistance is needed when things break in Devil's Crossing. That's especially true when the broken thing is the primary source of clean water for the settlement. However, sometimes Barnabas needs assistance himself, such as when repairing the aforementioned source of clean water requires raw materials not found in the settlement.

Barnabas

The Captain send you over? You musta done quite a service with the Dead if he's got hands to spare for Ol' Barnabas. Let's get to business, yes?

Our wind pump's broken down again and we're running low on water. We're all out of parts, so I can't fix 'er up.

Can always melt down what weapons we have, but I'm not too fond of being devoured in my sleep. I'll need scrap from Lower Crossing.

  1. Where can I find it?Dialogue advances to section 3.
  2. Um, why not just lower a bucket into the river?Dialogue advances to section 2.
  3. Is this enough Scrap? This option only appears if the player has 5 Scrap in the inventory. Dialogue immediately advances to section 2 of the quest turn in dialogue.
Barnabas

Have you seen the bodies floating out there?

Surface water around here is rank with disease and decay. Our only hope is this well.

Now are you going to get us some scrap or do I have to settle for sass?

  1. Where can I find it?Dialogue advances to section 3.
Barnabas

Search the ruined houses and the Old Dumping Grounds on the far side of Lower Crossing, past the Burial Hill. Smash some junk. Search the bodies of those things roaming around out there.

Where you get it isn' that important to me, just that you get it soon. We are running out of drinking water, nothing to be said about ever taking a bath again.

  1. I'll get the Scrap you need. The player gets the And Not a Drop to Drink quest. Dialogue ends.
  2. Sorry, I don't have time.Dialogue ends.
  3. Is this enough Scrap? This option only appears if the player has 5 Scrap in the inventory. Dialogue immediately advances to section 2 of the quest turn in dialogue.

And Not a Drop to Drink, not enough scrap in inventory[ | ]

It's not required to talk to Barnabas unless the player collected enough material to repair the pump (and this quest can be skipped if the player collected enough material before starting it). Barnabas can repeat his advice for where to look for scrap.

Barnabas

Did you get the Scrap?

  1. Not yet, where can I find it?Dialogue advances to section 2.
Barnabas

Search the ruined houses and the Old Dumping Grounds on the far side of Lower Crossing, past the Burial Hill. Smash some junk. Search the bodies of those things roaming around out there.

You'll find enough in no time!

  1. I'll be back.Dialogue ends.

And Not a Drop to Drink, turning in[ | ]

The scrap for the pump can be turned in to Barnabas so that he repairs the pump. This appears to cheer him up a bit.

Barnabas

Did you get the Scrap?

  1. Will this suffice?Dialogue advances to section 2.
Barnabas

Perfect! I will get the wind pump up and running in no time. Devil's Crossing will have safe drinking water again, and it's all thanks to you.

The first glass is on me.

  1. Glad I could help. The player receives the intermediate reward for And Not a Drop to Drink. The pump near Barnabas changes its model to working, but the water that pours out is visibly green. Dialogue immediately advances to section 1 of the part 2 dialogue.

And Not a Drop to Drink, giving part 2[ | ]

Sadly, repairing the pump was only the first step towards getting fresh water to the people of Devil's Crossing, and Barnabas informs the player that the water is poisoned by the Slith living underground. Barnabas asks the player to clear out the Slith.

Barnabas

Well, the good news is I got the water pumping again. The only problem is it smells like a sewer, only about a ten-fold worse.

Why, I haven' smelled something this rotten since...

  1. Since when?Dialogue advances to section 2.
Barnabas

Since I've cleared out a den of Slith, ages ago. They're loathsome reptiles - make their homes in swamps and dank caves.

They secrete a nasty poison into the water that makes it drinkable for them, but nearly always fatal to us. I'd bet good iron there is a nest in the cave that fuels our pump.

I'm too old for all this spelunking so I need you to go down there and kill it.

  1. How do I get to the cave?Dialogue advances to section 3.
Barnabas

This key will open the cellar in the shack behind me, right by that accursed riftgate. It connects to the bowels of the prison, which should lead you to the cave. Find the Slith Matriarch that's likely polluting our water supply and the poison should clear out on its own.

You do this, and all of Devil's Crossing will be honoring your name with every glass.

  1. I'll take care of the Slith. The player receives further objectives for the quest And Not a Drop to Drink. Dialogue ends.
  2. I don't have time for this.Dialogue ends.

And Not a Drop to Drink, part 2 not yet completed[ | ]

Barnabas can offer the player a reminder of where to go and who to kill if they talk to him without accomplishing this objective.

Barnabas

Have you cleared out the Slith den?

  1. Not yet, where is it again?Dialogue advances to section 2.
Barnabas

Open the cellar in the shack behind me. It connects to the bowels of the prison, which should lead you to the cave.

Find the Slith Matriarch that's likely polluting our water supply and the poison should clear out on its own.

  1. I'll take care of it.Dialogue ends.

And Not a Drop to Drink, turning in part 2[ | ]

The player should talk to Barnabas after clearing out the Slith that poisoned the water source for the settlement. Barnabas explains how desperate people are for water, and expresses his gratitude for fixing the problem.

Barnabas

Any luck clearing out those Slith? People are starting to beg me for water.

I don'know how many more times I can say 'it'll melt yer guts' before they just rush me and take it.

  1. I've taken care of it.Dialogue advances to section 2.
Barnabas

Well done! Once I pump out the remaining poisoned water, the spring should be clean enough for drinking.

I'll make sure to let people here know how much help you've been. They'll be grateful that they can get a drink without dissolving their intestines.

[The following paragraph only appears if playing on Normal difficulty.]

One more thing, take my rucksack. Useful for hauling back Scrap or whatever else you come across. I'm too old for that stuff now.

  1. Thank you. Glad to be of help. The player receives the reward for the quest And Not a Drop to Drink. The pump near Barnabas starts producing clean, not green, water. Dialogue ends.

After And Not a Drop to Drink[ | ]

The player doesn't have to talk to Barnabas after resolving the troubles with the pump, but that does offer an opportunity for Barnabas to thank the player again and lament that water isn't alcoholic.

Barnabas

Thanks for all your help! At least we can get a decent drink... even if that drink ain't a finger of whiskey.

  1. My pleasure.Dialogue ends.
